MD/MS is the next step for MBBS graduates who want to specialize — whether that's a medical specialty (MD) or a surgical one (MS). This page covers eligibility, the NEET PG entrance process, specialization branches, and the counseling structure you'll need to navigate.
Edusterling's counseling team helps MBBS graduates plan their NEET PG choice-filling strategy and evaluate colleges realistically against their rank, specialty preference, and budget.
MD/MS Admission: An Overview
MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) are three-year postgraduate clinical degrees pursued after MBBS. MD is the specialization route for non-surgical, medicine-based fields — general medicine, dermatology, psychiatry, and similar — while MS trains graduates in surgical specialties such as general surgery, ophthalmology, and ENT.
Admission to nearly every MD/MS seat in India — including 50% All India Quota seats, all state quota seats, private and deemed university seats, and armed forces medical institutions — runs through a single national exam: NEET PG, conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). A small set of autonomous institutes (AIIMS New Delhi and other AIIMS campuses, PGIMER Chandigarh, JIPMER Puducherry, and NIMHANS Bengaluru) currently sit outside the centralized NEET PG counseling process and run admissions separately — worth confirming directly if you're targeting one of these.

MD vs MS: What's the Difference?
Both are three-year postgraduate degrees pursued after MBBS, but they train doctors for different kinds of practice:
- MD (Doctor of Medicine) — focuses on diagnosis, medical management, and non-surgical treatment of disease, largely through clinical observation and pharmacological management.
- MS (Master of Surgery) — focuses on surgical intervention, training candidates in operative procedures and surgical patient management.
Which one fits depends on whether a candidate's interest and NEET PG rank point toward a medicine-based or surgery-based specialty.
Eligibility Criteria for MD/MS Admission
- A recognized MBBS degree (or an equivalent qualification recognized by the National Medical Commission).
- Permanent or provisional registration with the NMC (or the erstwhile Medical Council of India) / a state medical council.
- Completion of the compulsory one-year MBBS internship, or being due to complete it by the cutoff date specified for that year's counseling.
- A valid, qualifying NEET PG score for the specialty and quota being applied under.
- Foreign medical graduates must have cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) screening test and hold valid registration.
NEET PG: The Entrance Exam
NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduates) is a computer-based exam conducted once a year by the NBE. It is currently the only valid route into MD/MS and PG Diploma seats across participating institutions — no state-level or institution-level alternative exam is accepted for these seats, and this applies to foreign nationals seeking admission in India as well.
NEET PG governs admission to:
- 50% All India Quota seats across states
- 100% State Quota seats
- All private medical colleges and private deemed universities
- Armed Forces Medical institutions
- Post-MBBS DNB and NBE Diploma courses
Not covered by centralized NEET PG counseling: AIIMS institutes, PGIMER Chandigarh, JIPMER Puducherry, and NIMHANS Bengaluru run their own separate admission processes — confirm current requirements directly with these institutes.

MD/MS Admission Process
Counseling for MD/MS seats runs on the same two-tier structure used for undergraduate admissions — a central round for All India Quota and deemed/private seats, and state-level rounds for state quota seats.
- Clear NEET PG with a qualifying score/rank.
- Register on the relevant counseling portal (MCC for AIQ/deemed/private seats, the respective state authority for state quota).
- Complete registration and pay the counseling fee.
- Upload MBBS certificates, internship completion proof, and registration documents.
- Fill and lock specialty and college choices in order of preference.
- Wait for seat allotment based on rank, category, and choices filled.
- Report to the allotted college for verification and fee payment to confirm the seat.
MD/MS Fee Structure — Indicative Range
MD/MS fees in India are generally far more affordable than pursuing the equivalent postgraduate specialization abroad, though the gap between government and private colleges remains wide.
| College Type | Approx. Annual Fee |
|---|---|
| Government medical colleges | [UPDATE] — typically a modest annual fee |
| Private medical colleges (state quota) | [UPDATE] — significantly higher per year |
| Private medical colleges (management/NRI quota) | [UPDATE] — the highest fee bracket |
Career Outcomes After MD/MS
An MD or MS qualifies a graduate as a specialist in their chosen field, opening up:
- Consultant/specialist roles in hospitals, both government and private.
- Independent specialty practice.
- Academic and teaching positions at medical colleges.
- Further super-specialization via DM (medical) or MCh (surgical) programs.
